Before you come to class:
9/10 OverviewTo understand how drugs influence the user, we must know how the human body works. Chapter 4 in your textbook will give you an overview of the homeostatic system, which will focus on the nervous and endocrine systems.
In class we will begin with a lecture on the anatomy and function of the various parts of the brain. You will label and define these parts of the brain and infer how drugs interfere with the function of these regions of the brain. Given a couple examples, you will apply this information to determine which areas of the brain have been impacted by alcohol in particular. Work Groups
Next, you will get into your work groups and collaborate and discuss what you learned from your reading. In particular you will focus on coming up with a cohesive synopsis of your assigned topic to share with the rest of the class.
One person will serve as the facilitator during the 10 minutes of work group discussion. The facilitator's job is to make sure each person has an opportunity to contribute to the discussion and to make sure the topic has been addressed thoroughly. A person will be the note taker during the 10 minute discussion. The note taker will write down the main points for each person is sharing. Part of the note taker's job is to paraphrase what has been said and to organize the information into a cohesive outline. The speaker's role will be use the notes and input from the group members to share what they learned with the rest of the class. The speaker should clearly explain the assigned concept in detail in about 5 minutes. The other group members are expected to contribute. The group topics are: BRN - Chargers - Describe how neurons communicate. How do they send and receive signals? FOX - Cyclones - What are neurotransmitters? What role do they have in the body? MAN - Blue Devils - Explain the autonomic nervous system. MNT - Buccaneers - What is the cannabinoid system? How does it work? BRN - Bluegolds - What are opiate receptors? How do they work?
